Adult Education


The Adult Education program offers several opportunities for students including Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English Language Acquisition (ELA) courses. Students in ABE classes are enrolled into language arts, GED® exam preparation, and/or math courses with the goal of raising their competency levels up to high school level and/or to prepare for taking GED® exams to achieve a high school equivalency (HSE) diploma, formerly known as a GED®. ELA students are enrolled into unique courses covering reading/writing and listening/speaking and students are placed by level of competency in each category. 

Individuals are eligible to receive services if they meet the following criteria: 

  • Have attained 16 years of age and 

  • Are not enrolled, or required to be enrolled in secondary school (high school) as described in A.R.S. 15-802 

  • Are lawfully present in the United States, per A.R.S. 15-232(B) 

  • Identify as at least one of the following: 

    • basic skills deficient (literacy and/or numeracy) 
    • lacking a secondary (high school) diploma or its recognized equivalent 

    • is an English language learner

English Language Acquisition for Adults (ELA) 

English Language Acquisition (ELA) courses are for students whose native language is other than English. English Language Acquisition (ELA) courses focus on helping students obtain a level of English Language proficiency to meet personal and professional goals. They focus on developing communication skills and incorporating a variety of activities to best meet different learning styles and needs. Coursework helps prepare students for further academic study, employment and/or citizenship.

Adult Basic Education (ABE)  

ABE courses are designed for students who may or may not have a high school diploma or high school equivalency and need more intensive academic preparation for college or need to achieve an HSE (high school equivalency diploma, formerly known as a GED®). The courses in these programs lead to improved skills in language arts, math, science, and social studies. ABE courses are offered at various campuses and online. See the current schedule of classes for more information.   

Diagnostic testing is completed before classes begin for all new students and appropriate courses/levels are assigned.
