MEA 249 - Medical Assisting Lab Procedures


This course introduces the Medical assistant to the POL (Physician Office Lab) and the skills required to maintain the quality control in the lab. The student will learn Lab safety including the practice of bloodborne pathogen standards, OSHA, CLIA government regulations, quality assurance, and proper disinfection and sterilization procedures. Students will practice performing Point of Care Testing (POCT) using proper laboratory techniques, specimen collecting, processing, and testing specimens. Emphasis is on safety, infection prevention, proper patient identification, collecting, handling and labeling of specimens. Topics covered will include hematology, body chemistry, microbiology, ABO/Rh test, immunology testing efficiently maintain the laboratory are also studied.
