The medical assistant is an integral member of the health care delivery team, qualified by education and experience to perform administrative, clinical, and laboratory roles. The medical assistant often acts as a liaison between the doctor and the patient and is of vital importance to the success of the medical practice. The Associate of Applied Science in Medical Assisting prepares the student to take the national certification exam. The American Medical Technologists (AMT) issues national certification and maintains a registry of its certificate holders. This certification requires a minimum of 900 clock hours (or equivalent) of training in Medical Assisting skills (including a clinical externship). Admission to the Program:

  1. Must meet the college criteria for admission
  2. Appropriate assessment test scores or successful completion of PCS 021 , TRE 089 , and TRM 090   
  3. Completion of the TEAS V Test
  4. Students will need proof of immunizations, background check free of criminal activity, and negative drug screen
  5. Completed application submitted to the medical assisting program director

A completed application must be submitted for admission to the medical assisting programs once prerequisites have been completed. You can obtain the application online, at any MCC campus, from a student services specialist, or at the medical assisting department.

Requirements for Graduation: Passing all Medical Assisting and General Education courses for the AAS degree with a “C” grade or better. For a course to be eligible for transfer, the student must receive a “C” or better. Acceptance of a transfer course is determined by the receiving institution.

NOTE: BIO 201 and BIO 202 can be substituted for HES 129.
