Course Delivery Options



Hybrid Courses

Hybrid courses integrate face-to-face in an on ground setting or in a video conferencing setting and online instruction in a complementary manner to combine the best features of both. The face-to-face time is at least 50% of that for a traditionally delivered on-ground course. Actual face-to-face class meeting times and locations are listed in the course schedule. The remaining ‘time’ is comprised of instruction in an online environment in which content is delivered (examples include videos, narrated PowerPoint presentations, discussions, live webinars), learning activities are structured, and interaction occurs either synchronously and/or asynchronously, typically through MCC’s learning management system (LMS) and/or one or more interactive technologies. All hybrid courses require the same computer access, hardware, and software as online courses. Textbooks and materials for hybrid courses can be purchased at each campus bookstore. Note: MCC provides IT Help Desk Support to assist students with technical problems. MCC Connect  staff can resolve the majority of technology issues and, when necessary, will submit a Help Desk ticket to technicians in the Information Technology department.


Learning Communities

Learning Communities is a team approach to learning that links two courses together in order to build a sense of community focused on better learning. This approach restructures the student’s time, credit, and learning experiences to build community among students, between students and their teachers, and among faculty members and disciplines to achieve the students’ academic goals.

How does it work?

  • Students are co-enrolled in two theme-based courses per semester, e.g., Math/Biology and English/CIS.
  • Students are provided with a syllabus that integrates the learning in the two courses and that clarifies how faculty interact with each other in achieving the goals of both courses.
  • An embedded student services specialist helps students with stress, anxiety, and the development of coping skills, and by providing additional educational materials as needed. The embedded student services specialist also collaborates with faculty for other student-driven needs and spends time in the classroom.
  • Students are also given the option of group meetings outside of class for further coursework, studying, and social interaction. These opportunities can and often do result in long-term supportive relationships with others at the college, thus ensuring a better experience maneuvering college life.

Traditional Ground Classes

MCC offers a wealth of courses in ground classrooms, many of which are equipped with state-of-the-art technology including SMART Board interactive whiteboards, fully-equipped science laboratories, model dental labs, and hospital-simulation labs where students can practice new learning in work-related environments. Classrooms on each campus are designed to enhance the learning environment for that area of study. Research has shown that the classroom environment, including the seating arrangements, light, temperature, and availability of educational technology such as display screens and clickers, can boost student learning. MCC’s classrooms come in a variety of creative setups from lecture-style rooms to group carrels. Many are equipped with SMART Board technology which allows students and instructors to access live Internet sources during instruction, to create and present interactive presentations, and to engage in the use of state-of-the-art technology that will be available in the workplace. All MCC traditionally-delivered on-ground (non-Distance Education/Extended Campus) academic credit courses are web-enhanced. Web-enhanced courses are campus- or center-based, with face-to-face instruction, and utilize MCC’s learning management system (LMS) through which students can access course syllabi and other instructional materials (i.e., “handouts”, assignments, etc.). The LMS also provides students with direct online access to grades as well as facilitates communication with course instructors. Traditional Online Courses

Online courses are those courses where the content is delivered via the Internet using a course or learning management system either synchronously and/or asynchronously. However, students may be required to participate in non-online learning activities for some courses and/or programs (such as proctored exams, site visits, or interviews). Minimum computer hardware, software and Internet requirements for online courses will be found on the eCampus webpage. See Catalogs/Schedule for the most current online course schedule information. Note: Some courses require supplemental software. These courses are identified within the course schedule.

MCC Online provides access to a college degree, certificate, or courses for students whose personal circumstances make attending regularly scheduled on-campus classes an inconvenience or impossibility. A list of online certificate and degree programs is available at the eCampus webpage. Online courses differ in length and start at various times throughout the semester. Textbooks and materials for online courses can be purchased at each campus bookstore.

All MCC online courses use the ANGEL Learning System™. An online orientation may be accessed at either ANGEL Essentials or the MCC Portal.
