The Pre-College Studies program offers several opportunities for students including Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Education Development (GED), English Language Acquisition (ELA), and Transitional Studies (TRE/TRM) courses. Students enrolled for ABE and GED are enrolled into reading, writing, and/or math courses with the goal of raising their competency levels up to high school Level. ELA students are enrolled into unique courses covering reading/writing and listening/speaking and students are placed by level of competency in each category.
To enroll, a student must:
- be at least 16 years old,
- not currently be enrolled in another high school program,
- provide proof of legal residency,
- provide scores from College assessment test (high school graduates only), and
- prepare to attend an orientation class.
For additional information and related resources, visit the College Prep Courses webpage and/or call MCC Connect.
English Language Acquisition for Adults (ELA)
ELA courses are designed for students whose native language is not English. These courses lead to improved skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Depending on test scores, students will be enrolled in beginning, intermediate, or advanced courses. After completing each course, a student will be tested to determine if they are prepared to move to the next level.
If a student is returning after an absence of more than two semesters, the orientation and Test of Adult Basic Education Complete Language Assessment System - English (TABE CLAS-E) must be retaken.
ELA courses are offered at the Bullhead City, Kingman, and Lake Havasu City campuses. For additional information and related resources, visit the College Prep Courses webpage and/or call MCC Connect.
Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Education Development (GED®)
ABE courses are designed for students who have a high school diploma or GED, and need more intensive academic preparation for college. GED courses are designed for students who need to complete a high school diploma. The courses in these programs lead to improved skills in reading, language arts, and math. ABE and GED courses are offered at each campus during both day and evening hours.
The Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) pre-test is taken during the orientation course and appropriate course levels are assigned. The TABE test is a state-mandated requirement for taking a non-ELA ABE grant-funded course (including GED courses). Students are required to complete a post-test at each level to determine educational gains.
If a student is returning after an absence of two semesters or more, the orientation course and the TABE test must be retaken. For additional information and related resources, visit the College Prep Courses webpage, GED webpage, and/or call MCC Connect.
Transitional Studies (TRE/TRM)
MCC’s Transitional Studies program includes Transitional English and Transitional Math. These courses enable students to refresh their skills in English and/or mathematics. Enrollment in Transitional Studies courses is based on College placement test scores. If the student’s test scores indicate the need for academic development, the student will be enrolled in Transitional Studies. Successful completion of transitional courses satisfy some course prerequisites, but are not designed to fulfill required or elective degree course requirements.
