General Education


General Education Philosophy

(Established by the faculty on 8.16.13; Approved by Academic Standards 9.27.13; Approved by President’s Council 9.23.13)
 
Mohave Community College’s general education emphasizes breadth of knowledge and academic skills to complement the depth of knowledge students will acquire in the individual major. The general education curriculum at MCC is designed to provide students with the following skills:
1. Aesthetic Sensibilities: An appreciation of creative expression in the world around us.
2. Communication Skills: The ability to effectively convey meaning through various media on both personal and professional levels.
3. Critical Thinking Skills and Problem‐Solving: The ability to analyze data and arrive at logical and defensible conclusions.
4. Cultural Diversity and Global Awareness: An appreciation of relationships and differences in values, customs, and norms of diverse global communities.
5. Techniques of Inquiry: Use of standardized methodological framework to collect, analyze, interpret, and present findings.
6. Technological Competency: A proficiency in evolving technology to compete and flourish in society.

Certificate of Completion (AGEC only)

MCC offers three AGEC certificates: Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGECA.CC)Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGECB.CC), and Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGECS.CC). The approved AGEC courses will fulfill lower-division, general education requirements at any Arizona university or community college. Students will be required to fulfill the course prerequisites, major requirements, and upper-division requirements specified by each university. This certificate is awarded by MCC after successful completion of a series of specific courses and is clearly identified in the catalog.

Note: For a course to be eligible for transfer, the student must receive a “C” or better. Acceptance of a transfer course is determined by the receiving institution. A diploma is not awarded for AGEC Certificates of Completion. The AGEC Certificate of Completion will be annotated on a student’s MCC transcript.


Associate of Applied Science (AAS)

General Education Core Requirements

A minimum block of 15 credit hours of lower-division general education coursework must be completed. This block of courses represents only the general education portion of an AAS degree. See the specific program of study for total credit hour requirements. Note that the AAS is not a transfer degree program; however, many of the individual courses listed in the core requirements may transfer to any state of Arizona community college or state of Arizona university.  For more information see the AAS General Education Core Requirements  page.
