The Associate of Arts in English prepares the student for transfer to a university Bachelor of Arts degree in English. This program includes studies in both literature and writing. Students wishing to transfer to four-year institutions will have the academic foundations applicable to various fields such as journalism, creative writing, communications, education, and literature studies. For more information regarding the English, AA, see the English webpage.
Note: For a course to be eligible for transfer, the student must receive a “C” or better. Acceptance of a transfer course is determined by the receiving institution.
Program Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the program students will be able to:
- Generate critical thinking and media literacy skills through the study of literature and writing. (2,3)
- Analyze canonical works of American, British, and World Literatures. (1, 3, 4, 5)
- Explain how language and literature shape culture and identity. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
- Classify the aesthetic elements of literary works, and to construct written arguments that interpret, analyze, and compare literary works utilizing these aesthetic elements. (1, 2, 3, 5, 6)
- Produce works of critical and creative writing expressed coherently in clear, artful prose. (2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
- Compose researched arguments using appropriate reference tools, methods, and documentation. (2, 3, 5, 6)

NOTE: Courses with an asterik (*) indicates the course is a program requirement. First Semester: 16 credits
