Academic Standing

Academic Standing

The Academic Standing policy establishes a formal process through which faculty, staff, and administration at Mohave College may identify and provide holistic support to students whose cumulative grade point averages (GPAs) fall below 2.0.

The procedure is not intended to discourage or penalize students. Rather, it reflects the college’s commitment to providing students with timely assistance and support to ensure success in achieving their educational goals.

Policy

A student’s “academic standing” is the student’s status with respect to the college’s minimum academic requirements. The college reviews students’ progress and assigns academic standings at the end of each term. There are four categories of academic standing:

Good Academic Standing

The college assigns this status to students who possess a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 at the end of an academic term.

Academic Warning

The college assigns this status to students who have attempted any number of college-level credits and possess a cumulative GPA of less than 2.0 at the end of an academic term.

The Academic Warning (AW) standing remains in effect until the student’s cumulative GPA meets or exceeds 2.00, at which time the college assigns the student good academic standing, or until the student earns less than a 2.00 semester GPA, at which time the college assigns the status of Academic Probation (AP).

Academic Probation

The college assigns this status to students on Academic Warning who earn less than a 2.0 semester GPA (based on attempted credits).

A student on Academic Probation (AP) may continue attending Mohave College by achieving a 2.0 0 semester GPA in subsequent semesters and can return to good academic standing by achieving a 2.00 cumulative GPA.

Academic Suspension

The college assigns this status to students on Academic Probation who do not achieve a 2.0 semester GPA. A student on academic suspension (AS) must sit out at least one semester before petitioning for re-enrollment

Procedure

Academic Warning

Students assigned the status of academic warning are notified in writing of their status by the college. The notification refers students to support resources such as those provided by coaches or advisors. No further action is taken.

Academic Probation

Students assigned the status of academic probation are limited to less than full-time enrollment and notified in writing by the college that they are required to meet with an academic advisor or success coach or faculty advisor to collaboratively develop an academic success plan.

This plan may require the student to:

  • participate in the Academic Recovery Program
  • attend tutoring sessions
  • have regular check-in meetings with an advisor or coach during a semester
  • engage any other student support service identified as an appropriate way for the student to achieve good academic standing
  • Suspend extra-curricular and co-curricular activities

The academic success plan is complete when a learning contract is signed by the student and coach or advisor in collaboration with Instruction Associate Dean/Program Director and extra- or co-curricular program leaders. The success plan is then submitted for final approval to the Director of Student Success, Advising, and Retention, and Associate Dean/Program Director each of who may limit the number of credits allowed for enrollment. Enrollment in asynchronous online courses may also be limited if the student’s academic record indicates a greater likelihood of success in synchronous courses.

Academic Suspension

Students assigned the status of academic suspension are notified in writing that they must sit out of college for at least one semester. Students using federal financial aid can view the Satisfactory Academic Progress policy or may contact the financial aid office to discuss possible impact on funding. Students receiving Veterans’ benefits may contact the VA Benefits Administrator with questions related to the impact on funding.

Appeals

Appeal of Status

Students who believe they have been placed on academic probation or suspension as a result of extenuating circumstances may petition the placement status to the Academic Standards Appeals Committee.

Appeal of Credit Limit

Students required to maintain a specified minimum academic load to maintain financial assistance or program participation may appeal a credit-limit restriction to the Dean for Student Success or their designee. The Dean’s decision is final.

Petition for Reinstatement from Academic Suspension

A student on academic suspension may petition for re-enrollment after one semester of absence by submitting a request to the Registrar’s Office. Students requesting consideration for re-enrollment are required to have an academic success plan and signed learning contract completed in collaboration with an academic advisor or success coach or faculty advisor.

Final approval resides with the Dean for Student Success (or their designee) following review of the student’s academic success plan. The Registrar’s Office will process reinstatement requests upon approval.

Students may appeal denials of reinstatement to the Academic Standards Appeals Committee. The Academic Standards Appeals Committee’ decision is final. Students approved for re-enrollment will be assigned the status of Academic Probation.

Reinstatement from academic suspension does not guarantee reinstatement to all programs offered at Mohave College. Some reinstatement requests may also require the petition to be reviewed and approved by an Associate Dean of Instruction or Program Director for programs with special completion requirements (e.g., Health and Human Services programs).

Academic Amnesty

Mohave Community College permits students to have up to two terms of 100- and 200-level coursework excluded from figuring in their cumulative grade point average. Its primary assistance will be for those trying to raise their cumulative GPA to a minimum of 2.0 to meet eligibility for graduation (in cases where all other requirements have been met).

  • Academic amnesty can be granted only once and is irrevocable.
  • It applies to ALL 100- and 200-level courses in the entire term, no matter what the grade (A-F).
  • Because all amnesty-designated grades remain on the student’s transcript, other educational institutions may consider all coursework listed on the transcript when a student transfers.
  • Amnesty will not remove probation/dismissal designations, nor will it assist in determining financial aid eligibility.
  • As per federal financial aid regulations, amnestied courses must still count toward maximum time frame financial aid eligibility.

Note: The coursework to be amnestied must have been taken at least three years previous to the time of the request. Example: a petition for courses taken in the fall semester of 2019 cannot be submitted until the end of the fall semester of 2022.
